As the idea of metaverse – unite the world of games and economics that are different under a cohesive virtual umbrella that cohesive – crystallization in collective awareness of gamers, one of the most famous figures in the industry has opposed it.
In an interview with Bloomberg, the creator of the PlayStation Ken Kutaragi called Metaverse “isolated” and VR headsets “annoying”.
“Being in the real world is very important, but Metaverse is about making a real pseudo in the virtual world, and I can’t see the point of doing it,” he said in an interview with Bloomberg. “You prefer to be an avatar that is polished instead of your true self? Basically it’s no different from anonymous message board sites.”
Sony has struggled with the sale of VR headsets, selling around 5 million headsets, or a level of attachment of around 4% to Playstation 4 since the launch of the PSVR in 2017 shows that the gamer console is lukewarm.
“The headset will isolate you from the real world, and I do not agree with that,” Kutaragi said. “The headset is very annoying.”
On consumer electronics shows in January, Sony announced that the VR headset for PS5 was in work. On the other hand, Microsoft said that “VR for the console is not focusing on us today,” reject the idea of the VR headset for the Xbox.
John Carmack, the creator of Doom and CTO from VR Headset Maker Oculus (which was purchased by Meta, then Facebook, in 2014), also skeptics from current metaverse iterations.
“I have a pretty good reason to believe that leaving to build metaverse is actually not the best way to end with Metaverse,” he said in Keynote October, adding that he did not believe there was a really economy Crypto in the meta version.
In a recent note, the TECHNOLOGY Research House IDC said that while the concept of metaphevers will have the implications of the real world technology the current hype is “overblown” and everything is still years.
